Optimize Online Survey Platform
Enhanced the platform's usability and user satisfaction through two rounds of experimental testing and iterative design. Leveraged system evaluation and quantitative and qualitative research to gather actionable feedback on the existing product. Conducted A/B testing with 48 participants across six prototype versions during the second round to assess the impact of design changes. These insights informed significant improvements to the platform, resulting in a more user-friendly and efficient interface design.
Responsibility
Research and Test Approach
Conducted evaluation of Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, and Typeform as part of a competitive analysis to benchmark usability standards. Designed and executed two structured experimental tests to identify and resolve usability issues, incorporating feedback into iterative design improvements. Leveraged statistical methods and System Usability Scales to analyze testing data, ensuring data-driven enhancements that elevated the platform’s user experience.
Product Analysis by Operation Test
The initial experiment aimed to understand how users interact with and perceive online survey tools. Involved 36 participants in evaluating Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, and Typeform.
By recording user operations, utilizing System Usability Scale (SUS) and Questionnaire for User Interaction Satisfaction (QUIS), and conducting qualitative interviews, I gathered detailed insights on user satisfaction, ease of use, and interface clarity.
Key pain points identified included inconsistent workflows, confusing navigation due to UI layout, and insufficient visual feedback.
Design & Evaluation
The second round focused on testing an improved prototype featuring two UI layout variations aimed at enhancing navigation and visual feedback. Conducted A/B testing with 48 participants to evaluate the effectiveness of these design variations and measure user satisfaction. Leveraged System Usability Scale (SUS) and Perceived Usefulness and Ease of Use (PUEU) metrics for quantitative validation. Complemented by qualitative research, the study highlighted significant improvements in user experience and task completion rates. Additionally, insights from this research were applied to refine and complete the interface design process for the survey form, ensuring a seamless and user-friendly experience.
A / B Testing for Design Optimization
In the second round of experiments, incorporated A/B testing to evaluate two-panel layout variations and user guidance designs. For each variation, three guidance designs and two-panel layout options to assess user preferences and efficiency. The testing results offered actionable insights into optimizing layout clarity and guidance effectiveness, enhancing overall user satisfaction and task performance.
Key Design Variables Tested
Used two types of panel layouts & three types of feature guidance to explore how many amount of assistance they need when operating a survey form-making platform
Panel layouts
Integrate tool panels and the artboard in the same area, like Google form
Divide tool panels and the artboard into obviously different areas, like Survey Monkey
Feature guidance
Using guidance/explanation window to assist user operation
Using icons and texts to explain features
Soley Icon to help users working
Statistical Insights and Validation
SUS and PUEU metrics from the second round validated the effectiveness of the design changes. Combined statistical analysis revealed a 30% increase in user satisfaction and a 25% reduction in task completion time compared to the commonly used platform, Google Form.
Qualitative Research and Impact
Key Outcomes
Participants consistently praised the refined UI and workflows for their simplicity and clarity. Second-round participants reported a 35% higher satisfaction rate compared to the widely used platform, Google Forms, highlighting the effectiveness of the design improvements.
Results and Recognition
Building on the experimental results, I continued designing advanced features and refining the overall platform to ensure intuitive operation, even for first-time users. This project was recognized for its data-driven approach, seamless integration of qualitative research, and practical application of design principles. Stakeholders praised the significant usability improvements and valued the actionable insights for future platform development. Additionally, my research received a straight-A grade during the final oral defense and was selected for presentation at the International Virtuality and Reality Symposium.
